My husband and I recently traveled to Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards, located in the heart of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County. The estate spans roughly 450 acres with about 250 acres planted to vineyards. Rolling hills, wide views and meticulous vineyards make this a standout destination for visitors seeking exceptional cool-climate wines.

Sonoma-Cutrer has been crafting wine for more than four decades, blending Burgundian traditions with modern techniques to produce elegant Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs. During our visit we saw how careful vineyard practices, precise temperature control and thoughtful barrel selection all contribute to the final wines.

The recently expanded tasting room was receiving finishing touches in preparation for a June opening. The new space includes a large central tasting hall, intimate private lounges and a generous terrace with seating that overlooks the estate’s croquet courts—an inviting spot to relax between pours.

The croquet lawns are open to guests and add a playful, social element to the tasting experience—perfect for spending a sunny afternoon among the vines.

A casual mix of wine and a lawn game in a scenic setting makes for a memorable visit. The estate’s layout encourages both exploration and leisurely tasting.

We were accompanied by a small video crew—Alex and Sam—who documented the tour. It was fun to see the behind-the-scenes of a shoot while capturing our visit at the same time.

Donna Bernheim, the Wine Club Manager, guided our tour. A long-time member of the Sonoma-Cutrer team, she shared deep knowledge about viticulture, harvest timing and the winemaking philosophy that shapes each bottling. Part of the tour included a golf cart ride through the vineyards so we could view blocks up close.

Walking the rows of vines highlighted the precision required in the Russian River Valley, where coastal fog and cool marine influence produce ideal conditions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The region’s soils and climate favor expressive, balanced wines with bright acidity.

Inside the winery we visited a chilled room where freshly harvested fruit is conveyed through a cooled chamber prior to sorting. Maintaining proper temperature from vineyard to press is key to preserving delicate aromatics, especially for white varieties.

The press room and barrel storage areas display rows of cooperage—French oak barrels chosen specifically for each wine. Sonoma-Cutrer works closely with their coopers, tasting and selecting barrel styles that complement varietal character without overpowering it.

While the permanent tasting room completed renovations, tastings were held in a temporary yurt on the grounds—a cozy alternative that still allowed us to sample several wines in a relaxed setting.

We began with Sonoma-Cutrer’s signature Russian River Ranches Chardonnay. Their style favors brightness and mineral-driven acidity over heavy oak, offering notes of green apple and subtle floral aromas—a welcome contrast to the butterier Chardonnays commonly found elsewhere.

The highlight for me was the 2014 Winemaker’s Release Sauvignon Blanc, a limited release typically offered to wine club members. Sourced from multiple Russian River Valley sites, it shows bright tropical and citrus aromas with a clean, mineral finish—an ideal wine for warm-weather dining.

Sonoma-Cutrer also offers Pinot Noir that displays ripe berry aromas, earthiness and balanced structure. The Russian River Valley Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with tomato-based pastas and richer desserts, making it versatile for food pairing.
