I had fun putting together this collection of more than a dozen easy cakes for kids. Each design is simple enough for small hands to help with — ideal for birthdays, playdates, or any celebration.

What Makes These Cakes Easy To Make

  • Boxed cake mix. Many of these cakes use boxed cake mix to reduce measuring and make baking less intimidating for beginners.
  • Simple decorations. Instead of advanced piping, these ideas use decorations children can shape or place, such as fondant rolled like play dough or candy pieces for facial features. The puppy paw cupcakes, for example, use Oreos and Junior Mints.
  • Basic shapes. Most designs start with round cakes or cupcakes. When cutting is needed, the shapes and cuts are straightforward and kid-friendly.

What Others Are Saying

I made the hamburger cake this week for my 9-year-old’s first day back at school after summer. It turned out so well — I wish I could add a picture because I’m so proud of how it looked, and it tasted amazing, especially the “patty.” Thanks for the recipe! — Claire

Made the hamburger cake today and it was amazing! I used brownie mix for the “meat” and it looked more realistic. I made a whole pickle instead of slices. I love the instructions. Thank you! — Stephanie

If you don’t see full instructions below for a cake you want to make, use the description here as a quick guide and adapt as needed — many designs are flexible and kid-friendly.

Simple Hedgehog Cake

Little hedgehog cake frosted in chocolate and peanut butter buttercream.

This simple hedgehog cake uses a small round cake as the base. My son asked for a hedgehog birthday cake, and we made the quills with a grass piping tip, candy eyes, and a jelly bean nose. Quick steps:

  • Step 1: Bake three small round cakes and frost with chocolate.
  • Step 2: Outline and fill the face area with beige or tan frosting, smoothing with a spatula.
  • Step 3: Add candy eyes and a jelly bean nose.
  • Step 4: Use a grass tip and shades of brown frosting to pipe the quills.

Pigicorn Cake

The pigicorn — a pig-unicorn hybrid — is playful and unexpected. We stacked three round cakes, frosted in pink, added sprinkles, foam flowers, a horn, eyes, and a plastic snout for a whimsical look. Steps at a glance:

  • Step 1: Bake and stack three round cakes.
  • Step 2: Frost with pink icing and add sprinkles around the base.
  • Step 3: Add a unicorn horn, flowers, eyes, and a snout to finish the face.

Easy Hamburger Cake

This nostalgic hamburger cake is a favorite for kids. We used two yellow cakes as the buns and one devil’s food cake as the patty. The toppings are made from marshmallow fondant and piped frosting. Quick build:

  • Step 1: Bake three round cakes: two light-colored and one dark.
  • Step 2: Stack the bottom bun, add frosting to secure layers, then add the patty and top bun.
  • Step 3: Shape lettuce, cheese, and pickles from fondant or candy and pipe ketchup and sesame seeds with a round tip.

This project is fun because the layer colors do a lot of the work — there’s minimal outside frosting required.

Macaroni and Cheese Cake

This inventive macaroni and cheese cake was made by shaping a cake into a bowl and topping it with fondant “macaroni.” It’s playful and surprisingly easy:

  • Step 1: Bake one cake in a bowl-shaped dish and scoop out the top to form a cavity for the “pasta.”
  • Step 2: Roll orange fondant into ropes, slice into short pieces, and curve them into macaroni shapes.
  • Step 3: Apply a light buttercream coat, then add the fondant pieces to cover the surface.

You can also use piped buttercream for the “cheese” instead of fondant; a star tip makes quick work of the texture.

Kids can help roll and place the fondant — it doesn’t have to be perfect to look delightful.

  • Step 2: Spread red frosting for sauce and white frosting for cheese.
