Ingredients

2 lbs. ground beef
1 package onion-mushroom soup mix (or onion soup mix)
1/2 cup saltine crackers, crushed
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 (10 oz.) cans cream of mushroom soup
1 package brown gravy mix, prepared according to package directions (or about 1 cup leftover roast gravy)
Sliced mushrooms (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the ground beef, soup mix, crushed crackers, egg, and milk. Mix gently and shape into eight even patties.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
  3. Pour the flour onto a plate and dredge each patty on both sides to lightly coat.
  4. Brown the patties briefly in the hot oil until each side has a light crust. You do not need to cook them through.
  5. Place the browned patties in the crockpot; they may overlap.
  6. If using, add sliced mushrooms on top of the patties.
  7. Mix the cream of mushroom soup with the prepared brown gravy (or roast gravy) and pour the combined gravy over the patties.
  8. Cover and cook on low for 4–6 hours, until patties are cooked through and the gravy is thick and flavorful.

Notes

*To dredge the patties, pour flour onto a plate and press each patty into the flour to coat both sides.

**If you prefer a richer gravy, use about 1 cup of leftover roast gravy in place of the packet. Sliced mushrooms add extra depth and texture.

Kitchen And Baking Tips

  • Definition of “cream together” — When a recipe instructs you to cream ingredients like butter and sugar, beat them until light and fluffy. This helps create a tender, airy texture in cookies and cakes.
  • Storing garlic and onions — Use a paper bag with several punched holes on both sides to store garlic and onions. This simple method improves airflow and helps them stay fresh longer.
  • Make quick frosting from pudding — Mix instant pudding with half the milk the package calls for and fold in whipped topping. Use this mixture to frost cakes, cupcakes, or crepes. Different pudding flavors open up many tasty combinations, like banana pudding for banana or chocolate cakes, or white chocolate pudding for spice or vanilla cakes.
