Ingredients:

  • 1 box whole wheat spaghetti
  • 5 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 tbs sun dried tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • 1/2 cup basil, sliced
  • 1 tsp salt to taste
  • 1 tbs pepper
  • 1/4 cup parmesan, shredded

Instructions:

  • Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a rolling boil. Add the whole wheat spaghetti and cook until al dente according to package directions. Before draining, reserve one cup of the starchy pasta water, then drain the rest and set the pasta aside.
  • While the pasta cooks, heat a skillet over medium heat and add a generous splash of olive oil. Add the thinly sliced garlic and gently swirl so the oil is infused without allowing the garlic to brown—this should only take about a minute. Add the chopped sun-dried tomatoes and the halved cherry tomatoes, stirring and cooking for about 3 minutes until the cherry tomatoes begin to soften and release their juices.
  • Increase the heat to medium-high and pour in half a cup of the reserved pasta water to deglaze the pan and create a light sauce. Add the drained spaghetti and use tongs to toss and combine everything. Add the remaining half cup of pasta water as needed to reach a silky consistency. Stir in the sliced basil, then season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Serve immediately, topping each plate with extra chilli flakes if you like heat, a sprinkling of shredded Parmesan, and a light drizzle of olive oil or a touch of lemon zest for brightness. Adjust seasoning with a final pinch of salt and pepper before serving.

Enjoy!

A bed of glossy spaghetti pasta sits on a white plate. Blistered cherry tomatoes and bits of basil accent the tangled noodles.
A quick and easy meal. Perfect for lunches or weeknight dinners.

Why This Cherry Tomato Pasta Recipe Works

This recipe succeeds because it keeps the sauce light and focused on fresh ingredients. Cherry tomatoes blister and collapse, releasing a naturally sweet, tangy sauce that clings to the pasta when combined with starchy pasta water. Garlic and sun-dried tomatoes add savory depth while fresh basil and a final shower of Parmesan provide aromatic brightness and richness. The dish is flexible: add seasonal vegetables for texture, proteins to make it heartier, or serve chilled as a pasta salad for warm-weather gatherings.

Tips for Perfect Tomato Pasta Seasoning

Salt your water well: Generous seasoning of the pasta water seasons the noodles from within and enhances the finished dish.

Reserve pasta water: The starchy water emulsifies with oil to create a silky sauce that coats each strand.

Finish with fresh herbs: Fresh basil lifted at the end keeps its aroma and bright flavor—add it just before serving.

Tomatoes set blistering in a pan, and next to it a deep pot of spaghetti cook over a propane stove.
One pot, one pan. A clean-up hero!

Simple Ingredients

Fresh cherry tomatoes are ideal, but ripe store-bought tomatoes work well too. Sun-dried tomatoes in oil give a concentrated umami note that pairs beautifully with garlic and basil. Whole-wheat spaghetti makes the dish a little more substantial, but any long pasta will do.

Tips and Variations for the Best Flavor

  • Serve cold as a garden pasta salad: toss cooled noodles with cucumber, olives, red onion, fresh herbs and a light vinaigrette for a refreshing side or potluck dish.
  • Make it gluten-free by using pasta made from rice, corn, or legumes.
  • Add crunch with diced red onion, bell pepper, or toasted pine nuts.
  • Use leftovers within 2–3 days; store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and refresh the sauce with a splash of water or olive oil when reheating.
  • Customize freely: shredded mozzarella or crumbled feta, diced zucchini or yellow squash, peas or asparagus, olives, or a squeeze of lemon can all enhance the dish without overpowering it.
  • To add protein, stir in grilled chicken, pan-seared shrimp, or crispy bacon before serving.
